Catalog prices beat mall prices almost every time, but only when shipping and handling add-ons don’t eat up the savings. Here are three ways to save on shipping charges when you shop by mail.
1. Combine and Conquer. Lots of mail-order catalogs charges shipping fees based on the dollar amount of your order. Some even offer free shipping once you exceed a certain total. So unless you’re buying clearance items, wait until you have several items and order them all at one time.
2. Take a Spin on the Web. If you spot a product in a catalog, check the company’s web site before you call to order it. Some companies offer free shipping for Internet orders.
3. Keep it Light. Consider buying statuary, pots and pans, comforters, and other heavy items in town, especially if the mail-order company sets shipping fees based on weight.
