Dear Fellow Writing Teacher, Homeschool Mom or Parent,
Has Writing become that dreaded subject
noone wants to tread on? Most students dislike grammar because it has
no relevance. How BORING is that?
Why not use classics that are
interesting & have endured over time. Classical Rhetoric through
Structure & Style uses an old-style method called Progymnastmata.
Don't worry about that unknown name. Just know it really works to
teach your children how to write and keep their interest.
In the process of
teaching writing, your students will also discover how to form a good
argument. You know your children are ready for this manual when they
start arguing with me. Why not use their desire to argue to teach them
how to make a good argument?
The source texts
presented in Classical Rhetoric are designed to acquaint the students
with the great works of the classical tradition in the hope that it
will foster in them a love of learning. A sampling of texts used in
this program are:
- Chanticleer & the Fox
- King Solomon on
Wisdom
- Gettysburg Address
- Hannibal's Monologue
- Beowulf
- Shield of Achilles
- Odysseus
- Hamlet
- St Crispin's Day
Speech
- Mars Hill Appeal
- Canterbury Tales
You are welcome to use
your own source text to tie in learning rhetoric with what you are
already reading in history or literature.
| Thanks for all
you do to make my Homeschool a nicer place. Thank you also for
teaching my children to succeeded in their studies. I just
wanted to also let you know your seminars have helped my oldest
daughter to graduate from Sage College in Albany NY with a BFA
in Graphic Design with a 3.98 grade point average! She was one
of very few students who could write well and express herself
clearly. Her writing skills earned her a place of distinction in
her class. My next daughter could not even write a paragraph
until 10th grade. After using the IEW techniques with her for
years, she found her writing voice and all the techniques
clicked. She has just finished her first year in Community
College and has earned A's in all of her courses, most of them
humanities based, where she was required to write lengthy
analysis' and literary critiques. She originally watched the
TWSS with me on the first edition video tapes.
Now, my writing phobic daughter is in grade 8
is THRIVING on the History Based Writing Lessons. My daughter in
grade 4 is loving the Fairy Tales and Fables lessons. I can not
wait to start teaching my two younger sons to write using your
methods... AND...I am revamping our entire Language Arts program
to reflect IEW's philosophies. As they say: The proof is in the
pudding. My older children have proved to me that IEW is the way
to go with my younger set. Thank you so much again and again!
Blessings to all of you at IEW!

Classical Rhetoric
offers a complete writing composition course. Adam Muller fully
explains the rhetorical devices. In fact he also clearly demonstrates
these devices and provides exercises so your students have plenty of
practice with each device before he tries using them in his own
writing. This is vital to any writing program.
Each lesson is divided
into the following elements:
- Objective for the
lesson
- Source text (from
which student will write in his own words)
- Assignment for
student (step-by-step)
- Note Outlines before
writing rough draft
- Style Tools &
Examples (includes practice exercises)
- Rhetoric Fun
(explanation, demonstration, practice exercise)
- Check Sheets so
students know exactly what is expected in their writing
With 31 lessons moving through all nine
IEW units, this series composes essays and arguments based on the
Progymnasmata. Students will learn how to take notes, summarize
narrative stories, summarize references, write from pictures and
compose their own fables, myths and fairy tales.
Along those lines,
it is important to understand that this is not a workbook that will
teach the student rhetoric. It is a collection of lessons that you,
the teacher, can use to teach rhetoric. You are the critical
element for success with this book.
