Dear Fellow Writing Teacher, Homeschool Mom or Parent,
Are you afraid to teach your
elementary student how to write? Are you unsure how to make writing
simple enough for them to be successful?
Look no further... Fables, Myths & Fairy Tales is here to save the day!
It is full of heroes and princesses, knights and funny animals.
These characters and stories have been in books for ages.
Why is that? They are still around
because they help you to know about goodness, beauty and truth. Plus
you get to laugh a lot.
Writing skills & techniques are made so simple even a 7 year old can
understand how to create a well-written paragraph. When my 7 year
old was learning how to write, I had to create my own writing
lessons. I wish this was published 10 years ago so I could have used
it...and saved myself hours of time & energy.
Let me tell you how this manual
works...
Marie Gerber explains in simple terms
how the teacher or parent can use this book to teach writing to
young students. Keep your TWSS Syllabus handy and the 9 units from
Teaching Writing: Structure & Style to make your child a terrific
writer. Even 7, 8, 9 year olds can learn these structures and
stylistic techniques. I know because I've taught those ages
before...quite successfully.
Maria provides the source text from
which your child will write, a list of "what to do" to teach that
lesson, as well as charts, outlines & helps to make writing easier
than you've ever seen.
Here's a list of the topics for
each of the TWSS 9 units.

Write Your Own Fairy Tale Final Project: The Finale
Unit VII of
Fables, Myths, and Fairy Tales was structured with
Andrew Pudewa's direct assistance and according to one
of Dr. James B. Webster's lesser-known models in Unit
VII of
Blended Structure and Style in Composition
(Institute for Excellence in Writing, 2008). In
Fables, Myths, and Fairy Tales pp. 103 and 118, the
author attempted to concisely explain the 5-paragraph
Expanded Story Sequence model for longer narrative
stories, and three 5-paragraph fairy tales are presented
for imitation: A Christmas Carol, "Little Red Hen," and
"Rumpelstiltskin."
Because Andrew Pudewa
specifically wanted the student to write his or her own
fairy tale,
Fables, Myths, and Fairy Tales Unit VII had to be
modified to a 5-paragraph expanded Unit III (with
characters, setting, conflict, obstacles, climax &
resolution) for several reasons. In order to
successfully author a fairy tale-certainly an ambitious
task for most anyone-Level A students need to imitate a
fairy tale that has already been authored by a master.
Secondly, a fairy tale doesn't necessarily "choose 3
themes" as does "My Dog." A fairy tale does not express
the author's "best ... because" idea in the last
paragraph, nor does a fairy tale exhibit the typical
Unit VII introductory and concluding paragraphs. But a
fairy tale is, without doubt, creative writing.
So, although Andrew
anticipated that some families might have concerns about
Unit VII as it is taught in
Fables, Myths, and Fairy Tales, he bid the author to
ask parents/teachers to resist being legalistic about it
and just try it-for the sake of their children's
successes in writing their own fairy tales. Another way
to get around the hesitation would be ... to just imagine
that it's called something other than "Unit VII." Have
fun!
This book also includes many
checklists, teacher's notes and examples.
Parts of the book are written for a
student but we highly encourage the teacher to read over the lesson
before them.
For students grade 3 - 5...
When you use IEW, you will spend time teaching your students HOW TO
WRITE, instead of so much time worrying your kids with what to write
about.
SAVE
TIME and SPEND MORE TIME with your FAMILY
by using these writing lessons that work!
For Newbies &
experienced teachers.
Anything
Comparable?
There's nothing out there that's even
comparable to this for teaching children to write. The
bite-sized, well-sequenced units are just right for elementary
children... It encourages creativity by giving them a form in
which to express their ideas.
